| NEWARK The centre of historic Newark is dominated by both the ruins of its 12th century castle and the Church of St. Mary Magdelene. It was Newark Castle where King John died in 1216. The spire of the church is 242 ft high and the building is open to visitors. A Royalist stronghold during the civil war, Newark withstood no less than three sieges. It boasts many historic buildings and the cobbled Market square alone is well worth a visit. If museums are your thing, Newark's two exhibit Roman pottery, siege pieces and other historic artifacts. On the pub front, Newark is a real gem. There are a lot of great pubs in a condensed area and you can't fail to find one to suit you. There are so many pubs you could plan a different crawl for each visit. Newark is steeped in brewing history
and this is evident as you walk around the town. The
two magnificent ex brewery buildings of Warwicks & Richardsons on
Northgate and James Hole & Co (pictured below) on Beaumond Cross are
a reminder of this. Millgate folk museum has a recreation of a
pre-war pub. Places of interest: Millgate Museum Newark Air Museum Newark Museum St. Mary Magdalene Church Town Hall & Art Gallery |
