Once a year, Newark CAMRA awards the Pub of the Year certificate to a pub which, quite apart from serving top-quality real ale, has other notable qualities. This may be community spirit, good food, excellent ambiance, protected building or improvements to the pub.
Quality of beer is obviously the most important single factor
in nominating a pub, but others should also be taken into
consideration;
Atmosphere, service and welcome, clientele, sympathy with CAMRA
aims and value for money all come in to the equation.
Whatever the reasons, you can be assured that the current Pub of the Year will serve you a cracking pint of real ale.
If you think you know a pub in our area that deserves this title, email us with your nominations and reasons. A full list of eligible pubs can be found here.
The current Pub of the Year is the Crown, at Bathley.
On Friday 13th March a handful of us went to The Crown to present Trevor and Madeline with a certificate and a trophy announcing the pub as Newark CAMRA Pub of the Year 2008/9. They were certainly very proud of the acknowledgement of their efforts.
On arrival, the pub was already busy with both regulars and diners. We were made very welcome and were able to choose from the three real ales that were on offer from Jennings and Brakspear. The pub is clearly the hub of the community, and any passing drinkers are made most welcome.
