| Newark CAMRA Membership Secretary
and amateur brewer Ron Allison recently won fist prize in a
competition held by the
Craft Brewing Association, of which he is also a member.
His prize was a day's brewing at
Roosters brewery. Ron, originally from New Zealand,
but now resident in Newark, spent a day at the Knaresborough
brewery and produced Kiwi Gold. The beer was brewed with
Cascade hops and dry hopped with Hallertauer and has an ABV
of 4.5%.
Newark CAMRA thought this was a great opportunity to
spread the Real Ale message and invited a local landlord to
sell the beer for the branches nominated charity, the
Orchard School for children with special needs. |
Dave Cumberland, licensee of regular Good Beer Guide entry the
Castle & Falcon,
took up the offer and now Ron's beer is available at the bar
until the two firkins run out. Kiwi Gold is being sold at a
very reasonable £2 per pint, with all proceeds going to the
Orchard School. Big thanks go to Dave for putting the beer
on and supporting both Orchard School and CAMRA.
The Castle & Falcon is a great, no-nonsense boozer with a
good atmosphere and three well-kept beers, the regular being
John Smith's and the other two ever changing guests, usually
from micro's near and far. Even if you can't get to try the
Kiwi Gold, call in next time you visit Newark.
